Positions: 2  
Time: Approximately 1 year.  
When: Start date is flexible; preferable April 2023 
Where: University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD 
Who: US medical students in their 3rd and 4th years who are interested in Orthopedic Surgery.
Only USA students will be considered (we are unable to support visa requirements).  
Salary: Monthly stipend (~$30,000 per year)   


Job description: The Spine Division of the Orthopaedics Department at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore is accepting applications from 3rd year medical students, unmatched 4th year medical students, and recent US medical graduates looking to expand their curriculum and research experience in the field of orthopaedics. The research fellow will work closely with spine attendings and the rest of the research team (fellows, residents, students, and others). This position will provide you with ample opportunities such as:  

- Direct guidance, mentorship, and advocacy from faculty in research and orthopaedic residency application 
- Co-author 10 to 15 manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, posters, and/or book chapters, with great opportunity to be first author 
- Opportunity to present at national and international conferences 
- Departmental educational activities: Daily Spine Rounds, Weekly Spine Conferences, Spine Fellow Journal Club, Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, Mortality and Morbidity Conferences, Cadaver lab, Surgical Skills lab, and many others 
- Networking with residents, fellows, and attending orthopaedic surgeons 
  

Job duties: 
- Manage all studies in the spine division, including clinical trials, prospective and retrospective studies - Conduct monthly research meetings to attendings and fellows updating status of ongoing projects 
- Perform literature reviews, develop project ideas, and formulate protocols 
- Draft and submit IRB proposals 
- Recruit patients and obtain informed consent 
- Interact with industry sponsors and research coordinators at different sites 
- Collect, organize, and perform statistical analysis of clinical research data 
- Manuscript and book chapter preparation for publication, and grant submissions 
  

Qualifications: 
- Interest in orthopaedics and treatment of musculoskeletal disease 
- Strong academic record 
- Excellent personal and communication skills - Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously 
- Ability to work independently and efficiently 
- Previous experience in research and statistical analysis is preferable
