What type of hours did you put in on Away Electives?

Just to mentally prepare myself, I was wondering what type of hours you guys were putting in on your away rotations? During my 3rd yr surgery rotation I was usually up by 4:30a and at the hospital by 5 a.m. Is this standard for away rotations too or did you guys find yourself at the hospital even earlier than 5 a.m.? Also did you notice yourself taking less call willfully by the 3rd away rotation? I of course plan to work my butt off, but just wanted to get an idea of what that means in terms of hours.
This wasn't an "away" but at my home sub-i I showed up for rounds every day for 4 weeks having gotten vitals on all the patients (or other pertinent info) which means I was there by 5:30 and I was generally there for 12 hours per day. Unless I was on call in which case I'd stay until the next day for rounds and sometimes the first clinic session. So like 90+ hrs/week on average.

Prepare yourself for 168 hour weeks and you should be just fine.

I would say averaging somewhere between 90-100 hrs/week is typical, depending on the service. Services like trauma might require you getting there around 5-5:30am and staying until sometime that evening (not including call days). Lighter services might be typically 12 hour days (for example 6am-6pm). I feel like most places encourage q4-q6 call, with the time you leave post-call varying program to program. However, I'd like to read others' input as well.

depends entirely on the program. My experience at 4 programs: 1. 5:00am until 6:30pm with q4 call 2. 4:15am until 8:00pm with q4 call 3. 6:30am to 5:00pm with no call 4. 6:00am to 4:00pm with call whenever I wanted. Typically no weekends off (with a few exceptions).

depends entirely on the program. My experience at 4 programs] Yeah, it depends entirely on the program and the coast. West coast programs tend to be more laid back while east coast programs tend to be more hardcore. At one program, I worked about 70 hrs/wk. At another, I worked 125-130 hrs/wk.

Its because they all spend their time surfing...I'm sure West coast programs put in similar hours as every other program. Or maybe all the sun puts Orthopods out of business because everyone is high on their Vit-D.

I am sure the residents put in the same # of hours. I think the west coast programs go easier on med students though.
