Some programs must be sending out A LOT more interview offers than they have open slots. I was put on LSU's waiting list after an interview offer since the slots were full by the time I returned their email. I recently received interview offers at Tufts and NYMC, both by email. I called Tufts 3 hours after the offer went out, and 1 of 2 interview days was already filled up. On the other hand, NYMC was signing people up for appointments at 15 minute intervals--anyone know what that's about? By the way, I haven't heard from a handful of places others have reported interviews at (I'm assuming that's a bad thing!). Also haven't heard from a couple of places people have reported rejections from (maybe a good thing?). My current tally is 4 interviews, 9 rejections, and 27 programs yet to hear from. Finally, maybe some CA schools are bucking their reputation and showing a little more courtesy this year by actually responding to people--I recently was turned down by UC Davis. I have been offered interviews off of programs' wait lists at many a place. Does this make you a less viable candidate? Will I necessarily be ranked in the "bottom 10" if I go to these interviews? I'd rather save some money than bet on getting into a place where I am considered to be less than qualified. Since students are now starting to cancel their interviews for January, I have been receiving interview invitations from programs' "wait lists." Question for you residents out there: If I am coming off of a program's wait list, will I most likely be ranked at the bottom of their list? I don't want to waste money for traveling to an interview if I am only going to be 79th out of the 80 candidates that program has to rank. Or are all students automatically on a level playing field once they are offered an interview? I'm sure it differs from program to program, but any insight would be appreciated. However, if you are not so stellar, numbers may be the key to getting a spot. Also, you never know what will happen at the interview. Maybe you'll find out that you and the chairman have something of interest in common and that may be the key to getting a spot in their program. I would be cautious bypassing any interviews if your numbers are low. Trying to get into orthopedics the second time around is even harder.
