Ok, I have read the Nov 2002 JBJS article and I know that the most important thing is to do well on your away. However, right up there is a good letter from a respected source. So, in the grand scheme of things, am I better off going to HSS/HJD and kicking ass during my away and getting a good letter there, or taking my chances at a smaller program (Mt Sinai) and kicking ass and hoping that I match there? Thanks, soudes Rant of the Day: Is it me or do you just want to pound your non-medical friends who whine about their schedules? They MAKE MONEY for crying out loud!!
At a place that rotates a 100+ students and only interviews 60 or 70 a bunch of people who try to work their tails off end up with nothing. I would suggest going to a program that doesn't rotate a ton of people / is in a city that you like. I skipped the HSS rotation and ended up with an interview there. I know strong candidates that rotated there and ended up with nada. It's really a bizarre random system

On the other hand, I did an away at HJD and although I didn't get a LOR from Dr. Zuckerman, I got an excellent eval from him. His name is huge and almost every interviewer said wow...Dr. Zuckerman said this...good job. It was better than a great LOR from an unknown guy from another place.
