I know this isn't the response you are looking for, but so many residencies are incredible in different ways. Cliche, but true. Some of the so-called top academic programs can be completely worthless if you are interested in a private practice following residency. On the other hand, some community hospitals would be terrible picks for people interested in fellowships and subsequent academic positions. Some people like California; others hate it. Some think NYC is the place to be, while others would rather stick a knife in their eye. Many think HSS is the No. 1 program in the country, but take a look at previous posts to see how many others disagree with that assessment. Do you have a specific area of the country you are interested in? Are you interested in academic or community practice? I can give you MY top 10 for academic programs listed on the coasts (ie. west or east coast programs). In no particular order: Harvard Johns Hopkins Duke HSS Univ. Washington UCLA UCSF Univ. Pennsylvania Univ. Pittsburgh Hosp. Joint Diseases Just my opinion. I'm sure many others have different picks than me. Actually, it is an overall excellent program that encompasses top surgeons in all departments (sports, oncology, trauma, hand, foot, spine, general, etc.) In addition, the Ortho Dept. dominates the Strong Memorial Hospital and this allows for many perks. The only downside is Rochester, NY does not have the climate of San Diego. However, it is a really nice place to live if you can put up with snow in the winter. I would add Mayo to the list. I did not visit Mayo, but I would say that Mayo is the type of place, as are the others on the above lists, that produces faculty members and chairs at other programs. jss1 Registered User Posts: 9 (3/19/01 10:25:50 pm) Reply One more for the Top 10 List It is a great training program with regards to being able to practice immediately (and afford to pay the bills) or achieve high powered fellowships. My understanding is that it is one of the most highly funded ortho and musculoskeletal research programs in the country. In fact, I was told it was near the top (i.e. within the Top 10) for NIH funding. They also have an outstanding lab and is one of the few programs that allow you to match into a 6 year program (with one year devoted to research.) Regardless, it's no big deal. An unbelievable program in all regards if you're willing to do a six year residency (6th yr is mandatory). They have top surgeons in all specialties, and the operative experience is excellent. Plus, it has a big name and their residents get the top fellowships. Other excellent programs (maybe not top ten, but still excellent) would include Northwestern and Rush in Chicago. Unless you want to do lots of research in the future and stand around during your first 3 years you may be sorely disappointed....I rotated and interviewed at many of these places and daily thank god i didnt wind up there...
