It looks like there is some justice in the world. If this guy had been approved for a residency it would have been a crime. He has already presided over the destruction of two programs. He should never be given the chance to work with another. Any of you students hard up enough to apply to a program with Dr. Blasier's name associated with it deserve what you get. You are warned by a resident he has screwed royally. There is so much bad karma associated with the DMC it will take years and many cycles of the great wheel to make amends. Do not go near this place or anyone associated with it. Look at the faculty posting on the earlier forum entry. If you see any of those names on a program, stay far, far away.

While I tend to agree with the general sentiment about the proposed program, don't throw guys under the bus who either: 1) Had absolutely nothing to do with the original Wayne program or 2) Weren't even in Michigan when all this went down or 3) May have had no idea they were even part of an application for a new program. Having trained in Michigan, I know several people on this list personally and they are excellent people who were probably excited about an opportunity to teach residents. Obviously an emotional issue, ACGME probably did well to let things "cool off" for at least this year though it seems the area could/should support another program as the loss of the Wayne program was a big blow to the area.

Not to pick on you, but I have never understood that sentiment. I have heard it several times. To my knowledge, it is not the role of the ACGME to provide residents to hospitals and communities based on the needs of the region for medical care. The "big blow to the area" should not happen. The hospital system has a moral and ethical responsibility to provide standard of care treatment to all persons who walk through their doors. If they cannot, they have options]explicit [/u]statement that is was deserved for not aggreeing to last year's proposed program transfer are just a few.

I agree that not all the members of the new PIF deserve a scarlet letter.

Many of those names are associated with the old Wayne program. Now with DMC they talk about how awful and falling apart it was. They say the new program would be better. What did they do the last several years? Collect a check, get a free servant and know they had the dedicated core staff to blame it on. How many of them showed up to conference? How many cursed how journal club deteriorated into a monthly keg party by the then program director and his protege? They cursed the department chair who was forced to save the old Grace program and now sign up to serve in the new Grace program. This naive excuse is getting old too. By now, if not before they took the job, every new and innocent member of that list knows good and well who they are in bed with; and they are staying. Just because they weren't there last year, doesn't mean things haven't changed. The CEO, CMO, proposed program director, and Harper president/telephone pollster are all still there. They were told not to worry about the funding transfer because the RRC doesn't look at those kinds of things, only the X's and O's of the PIF. They were all fine with that. Shouldn't they care? Shouldn't it make them worry about the character of the people and organization who wish to steward a new program? Several old residents tell of the "(Blank) the residents, they get what they deserve" quote to justify the CMS funding staying at DMC Corporate. Surgeons and administrators from hospitals on the PIF were aparently there too. I guess they must have agreed. You 2 should know better having trained there by a staff now decimated by this machine and the traitors on board.

Wow, this area seems to evoke some REALLY strong feelings. Unfortunately most of the people writing seem to be ortho residents or affiliates. Now for the real deal...from a PGY-5. You guyz have probably forgotten how many MS4's would do just about anything for A SINGLE ortho spot. I applaud you for "getting the word out" on the situation in Detroit, however, when black monday comes, and the unlucky few don't get a spot, I can guarantee you that they'd rather be at a back stabbing, uncaring program, than doing research, prelim surg or some other uncertain pathway hoping to get into ortho. I have had the opportunity to sit in on and perform ortho interviews this year and can assure you that candidates are doing everything to get in... Many were humbled to find themselves unmatched last year, while others knew they had little chance but keep trying anyway. And lets not talk about the FMG's. I've met FMG's in the labs that have been trying for ortho >6years... Step I & II scores >240, Few if any interviews. I can assure you that if this "god awful" program does reopen, it will fill. Besides, a program is what you make of it. I think some of us already in ortho have forgotten the trail we blazed. Personally, this was the only medical career option for me...and I know that I would've given anything and gone anywhere as an MS4, just for the opportunity to do ortho. -Hulk

Well it looks like this is the end-around for the DMC. I wonder if they’ve given up on starting an allopathic orthopaedic program and instead are going to use some of those 64 GME spots to start an osteopathic program to give them new labor…er…I mean residents – I always get that confused with the DMC. This is in no means meant to open up an MD – DO debate. I just think that the powers that be probably realized that they committed an ultimate sin that was realized by the ACGME/RRC and that a new DMC MD ortho program is only a pipe dream. It seems like they’ll stop at nothing to get their prize. While the DMC has made multiple statements in the media and their proposals about primary care and utilizing the up-town hospitals for the DO programs while the MD programs stay downtown, I think these are only thinly veiled promises as the leadership is looking to maintain an orthopedic presence downtown. I’m also curious as to how you’re going to convince a new applicant to come to a new program when the proposed program director isn’t even going to be around to see you finish. They live in fantasy land and believe that there will be a new department and that they can get a new residency. They are assembling a search committee now for a new chairman, but of what? The current chiefs are going to have to shut the lights off when they leave. I guess both sides are realizing that they probably didn’t make the best choices last year…oh well…you live, you learn.
