I am a first year at a midwest state school and I am weighing my options for this upcoming summer. I am very interested in ortho but I know I many change their minds between first year and match. My question is should I do research this summer in ortho or should I do it in something else. I have heard showing interest in research is what matters so I am not sure what to do. I wonder if since I have shown interest by volunteering, that doing research in another field would show me as more well rounded. My history in standardized tests is not great but not bad and I expect my step 1 will probably be good/avg but nothing spectacular so I need other things to stand out. I have 1 year research in olfaction from undergrad with one publication. I have been volunteering once a month in an ortho free clinic and will continue this indefinitely.
Do the research
