We have a great group of residents; laid back, easy to get along with. Excellent operative experience with some early hands on experience as an intern. Lots of trauma experience. Intern year involves 2 months of ortho trauma, 5 months of general surgery rotations, neurosurgery, plastics, anesthesia, radiology, and ER. There are some bad months but the ortho time and the last three off set the bad. Our program director is very involved and works to optimize our experience. I know this is very general; let me know specific questions. I'll do my best to answer them. Are many of the residents married? with children? How highly valued is family life there? What is louisville like to live in? How well trained to the chiefs feel coming out? Are many residents getting into fellowships? if so, where? thanks a ton. og71 OSRR Intern Posts: 12 (12/21/01 8:43:22 am) Reply re: Call averages to Q4 on the busier services; there are a couple of rotations with no call--just lots of operating. 17 out of 21 residents are married; 11 out of 21 have kids. Out-of-hospital time is highly valued and we do our best to help each other in getting out when not on call; not to mention 4 weeks vacation per year. At this point, I believe it's about 50/50 on people going to fellowship versus going out into general practice. This program sets you up very well to be ready to practice general and chiefs come out with ~2000 cases (probably a little higher, definitely not lower). Last year's chiefs, 3 went directly into practice, 1 signed on at the Leatherman Spine Institute here in Louisville. I'm still in the process of figuring the city out, but I can tell you there are lots of good restaurants and plenty of spots with good live music (checkout Bardstown road if you spend any time here). Minor league baseball and hockey are in town; U of L football and basketball are huge. Lots of UK fans also with Lexington only an hour away. Within reach of many weekend trips including Indianapolis, Cincy, Memphis, Nashville, Chicago, St. Louis. Hope this helps, come see us.
