Position: Clinical Research Assistant Salary: An hourly wage will be provided Where: Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, MI When: Beginning Summer 2024 We are seeking ambitious graduate and medical students to apply for a one to two-year paid research fellowship. This is a full-time research fellowship that will provide highly motivated applicants with the opportunity to gain wide exposure in orthopaedic surgery and various other specialties. This position offers applicants a chance to acquire experience in the design and implementation of new research projects from the early stages of literature review and writing IRBs all the way through publication. This position allows applicants to hone their leadership skills, network with renowned national experts across various disciplines, and enhance their clinical acumen through frequent shadowing experiences. This is a tremendous opportunity for students taking a gap year to strengthen their applications to medical school or residency. Research assistants will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Charles Day, MD, MBA. Responsibilities: • Lead a research team of 40+ medical students. • Serve as point of contact for all research-related inquiries. • Have full understanding of research protocol. • Overlook 40+ ongoing projects (ensuring IRB compliance, progress on collecting data, abstract and manuscript submission, providing updates, assigning project leads). • Schedule a regular cadence of research meetings with the PI and students in the lab. • Lead research group meetings and edit the ledger with updates from students. • Manage clinic and operating room schedules and shadowing opportunities for medical students. • Work closely alongside the PI to manage and delegate academic/ research administrative responsibilities. • Organize and distribute surveys and questionnaires (RedCAP, PROMIS, QuickDASH) to preand post-operative patients. • Monitor IRB approval periods, submit IRB protocols, amendments, and reports, and ensure annual check-in deadlines are met. • Write and submit manuscripts to various scientific and scholarly journals. • Coordinate abstract submissions, conference registration deadlines, and regional/national conference logistics (hotels, flights, and other accommodations). • Organize group outings and social events (both locally and at conferences). • File reimbursement claims and pre-authorization forms for students. • Spearhead the recruitment and onboarding process of new team members. Qualifications: • Strong academic record • Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Word & Excel, Outlook or other email systems, use of computerized medical tracking systems, and internet search capabilities. • Strong motivation for a career in medicine and demonstrated interest in research. • Must be able to multitask duties, prioritize workload, organize files and workspace. • Must work well in a team-based setting and be self-directed in an open office setting. • Must communicate effectively with patients, research team, PI, ancillary staff, and providers. • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. • Must have excellent interpersonal and professional skills to work effectively with others. • Must be well-oriented with academic/scientific search engines, and literature search and review Benefits of the Position: • Authorship on all papers significantly contributed to. • Ample opportunities to enhance CV for medical school/ residency program applications. • Opportunities to create and pursue your own research interests. • Opportunities to observe surgical procedures (project permitting). • Ability to attend resident education lectures and grand rounds. • Opportunities to present poster/ podium presentations at conferences.
