Congrats to those that matched and condolences to those that did not. I'll be going to prelim GS this year. This was my second match. Carib grad (Saba) -- US clinicals, all A's Step I 238/96, Step II CK 252/99, Step II CS - Pass, Step III - 225/93 Research before medschool -- Radiology at Harvard(1 article, 2 posters) Research after medschool -- ortho at HSS (so far, 1 poster) Had 4 ortho interviews (two more than the first time around), thought they all went well. Received post-interview communications "excellent interview, hope you consider us" type. Will be applying for ortho again next year. Hope that the whole "third time is the charm" pricinple works out. You probably already thought of this, but you might consider calling where you interviewed and ask them about weaknesses in your application/interview and how you may improve for next year - make sure you don't sound like you are whining, just looking to improve. Also check with your school counselor and have him/her read your recs to make sure there is nothing glaringly bad. I was an interviewer, and if there was even a single sentence suggesting they wouldn't work out, I moved them to the end of the list.

How many programs did u apply to in all?? When did u graduate from Medical School???

I graduated 4 yrs ago and applied to 60-some. Sorry, I don't remember exactly. Since I was interviewing as an incoming chief, I looked at personality, letters, ability to fit in, and if I believed they could handle the hard work - e.g. worked or volunteered while in school (undergrad or med), not just scores.

My bad Ortho3838...my question was directed to Grimgrizly. I was curious about the fact that he had 2 interviews first time and then now 4 becos his scores looked terrific. Does the fact that one is an IMG weigh heavily in at least invitations to interviews???

I graduated last year (finished clerkships in March 2007). Being a foreign grad matters. I am guessing that for most programs that would be the first screening step, given that only 44 fmg's got into ortho this year. Last time around i applied to about 40 programs, this year -- 86. I would have applied to all, if money were not an issue. So, if there are any ortho hopefuls out there - try to stay in US, or transfer into either MD or DO program, once you're in a school abroad. True, there may be a couple of Carib grads getting into ortho every year, but those are exceptions, not the rules.

hi grimgrizzly, i'm not trying to pick on someone when they are down. I'm very sorry things didn't work out for you in this years match, and I truly do hope they do work out in the future. however 44 IMGs did not match in orthopedics this past year. that #44 consists of "independent applicants" which includes US grads who switched specialties, US grads who matched after doing a PG1 prelim surg year, DO students and yes IMGs. Is it possible to match as an IMG... YES. Is it probable... unfortunately NO. again i mean no disrespect... i just wanted to qualify that statistic that you quoted

mjl14 is correct -- independent applicants category does include US non-seniors, i.e. US grads who did not match last year, so the true FMG number is even smaller. BTW, no offense taken. Can't say that i am down either, just getting ready for the next step, really
