From reading this board, I can get a lot of information on the top academic programs. Does anyone have any information on community programs, or less research oriented, less malignant academic programs for those of us that want to be a community based orthopod?

although technically affilated with mich st, only three of the attendings are emplolyed by MSU, the rest (~25) are privates but are all pretty darn cool. I did a month there and really liked it, plus they have a lot of perks like unlimited free food at both the hospitals, one of the hospitals is brand new (~1yr old) to name a few
Akron general is another that people seem to like based on the happiness of the residents and staff and the lifestyle. I really have not heard much bad news about it.

I would look at both Akron programs, Grand Rapids, and the Carolinas.

All the programs listed above are great, in addition, Greenville (SC), Orlando, Wichita, William Beumont, Allegheny General are all great programs where you operate tons and guys there are pretty cool and happy

I interviewed at all academic programs except for one - Grand Rapids, and it ended up being #2 on my rank list. I thought that the training was very good. Call was front loaded (excellent) and the attending were great. The perks seemed endless and the residents were all very happy. I would definitely look hard at this program.

I can tell you alot about West Virginia if you want to know about it. Smaller program (15 residents-3 per year). One of two level I trauma centers in state. Gets pretty heavy trauma even though it is in a town of population 30,000. Alot are transfers from more rural areas of WV. Hard working, blue collar type program that doesn't emphasize research but certainly encourages it. Pretty even mix of residents going into both private practice and into fellowships. If you want more specifics let me know.

I was extremely impressed by MSU Kalamazoo. Take 2 residents per year. The residency is set up in a way where instead of doing specific rotations for 2-3 month blocks, you do a variety of things every day. Meaning you can start the day off with a carpal tunnel, do a total knee next, scope a shoulder, and then end the day with a lumbar laminectomy/decompression. These guys seemed like they operate more than any of the other programs that I visited (this was the only "community" program I visited). And these guys have perks out the Wazzoo in Kalamazoo (that rhymes). Free loupes, free palm pilot, book allowances, paid-for conferences. NO in house call. Definitely an impressive program. I'm looking for hi-powered academic, so I didn't rank it very highly, but with that said, I'd be extremely happy if I ended up there.

Don't discount the educational possibilities at community programs. I was very impressed with the operative experience and didactics at Mt. Carmel, William Beaumont, and Greenville.

Allegheny General hospital is a great community program that maintains an academic "feel" (conferences, research, etc.) yet you get to operate early and often. Worth checking out...

I was impressed with another program...Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans...great operative experience, really nice residents...however, limited research

Posts]doc_scott@yahoo.com[/url] He was a resident there and is an attending there now. I e-mailed him earlier this year. He responded within a day and also passed my e-mail on to a current resident. From what I can tell, Morgantown is really the only downside to the program.

i agree about the major downside being morgantown, if the college were not there there would be NOTHING. The only problem (in my opinion) with otherwise a very good program.

Good parts of Morgantown: No. 1-near Pittsburgh (pro football, pro-hockey, concerts, better shopping) #2-great for people who like outdoors as it is close to whitewater rafting, skiing, biking, hiking, ect #3 it is a college town and some people like that atmosphere
Bad parts of morgantown: No. 1-it is a college town and some people don't like that #2 If you don't like outdoors not always a whole lot to do #3 Small place, 30,000 outside the university (university adds another 23,000)
What it comes down to is what you like.

If you're looking for a big city, obviously Morgantown is not for you....but there is alot to do here. World class kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, a growing rails-to-trails system, a new rec center, 2 theater companies, etc....Its a college town but has been consistently voted one of the best small towns in the east. Not to mention inexpensive....owning a home during residency is not a luxury you get everywhere....so classifying Morgantown as the weak link of the residency would be way way off in my opinion...
