I was very impressed with the program: lots of early operating, good mix of young staff/experienced staff, very pro-resident chairman. There were at least ten residents who showed up to the interview activities, which I use to gauge how much they (especially the junior residents) care about who the program is hiring. Facilities were attractive, centralized, and presented well. Cleveland has one of the best children's hospitals in the country. Majority of trauma rotation is done downtown at a Level I trauma center called MetroHealth hospital, which we did not see, but heard good things about. Most residents spoke highly of Cleveland and affordability, things to do, etc. Most residents live in East Cleveland. Residents take first call all of second year and for four months of third year - from that point on, all call is taken from home. One thing that was emphasized during the visit was the large amount of research available. The program receives an enormous amount of NIH funding. A fourth year resident told me he's had to turn down about four faculty who were interested in his help with various projects. Also interesting: two of six residents will do a research year after internship. The residents say that there are usually two people that want to do it for personal/professional reasons. I interviewed there in mid-January and was impressed with many aspects of the program. Crazy Joe summed it up well, but one other thing I should mention is that the spine department here is second to none in the country. Dr. Bohlmann and Dr. Emery are both huge-name attendings. Dr. Bohlmann has apparently trained a lot of the other big-name spine attendings in the country, like Dr. An, Dr. Zdeblick, and others. The weakest department here is probably sports, but they were looking to hire one more sports attending, last I heard. Otherwise, the training here is completely solid. In-house call is roughly Q5 during your second year, which is terrific. However, they DO stay up all night long since their ER is incredibly busy. Tough, but infrequent, call nights.
