Manual of Orthopaedics by Swiontkowski and Stovits (lippincot, Williams, Wilkins) is a great book.

At most programs (all that I know of), interns take the OITE. But most interns don't care how they do because the department doesn't care.

i was told that we do not take the OITE. we also do not take the gen surg equivalent. we pretty much only have to "worry" about step 3

Most programs are having interns take the OITE, but when you take it as an intern you are considered a PGY0 and it does not count in the Ortho program's overall score. I would recommend OKU or Miller's Review, both widely used as a primary source for OITE. The yellow journal has excellent review articles that are appropriate for juniors.

For those less familiar, I believe MDforhire was referring to the Journal of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (www.jaaos.org) which I agree is an outstanding resource. Intern year it is probably worthwhile to focus on fractures/trauma and basic science for your reading as trauma is something that everyone is expected to be comfortable with early on and the Academy is focusing on basic science more & more for the OITE and boards.
