Hey... I couldnt help but notice that I have nearly the same stats as you... MD/PhD Step1:231 Passes/HP mostly with one honor. How did things fare for you in the match? There are very few MD/PhD applicants in orthopedics and it is unclear if this helps/hurts/doesnt matter. In other fields like optho, ent, derm potiential clinician scientists are heavily recruited to the best programs. It doesnt seem like orthopedics is similar in that respect. It make sense considering there are only 22/23,000 orthopedic surgeons that have have research grants in excess of a million dollars, which is miniscule compared to fields like IM where the department of medicine at UCSF has funding in excess of $100 million per year. I don't think being an MD/PhD will make a global difference in your ability to match across all programs. However, it will certainly help at certain programs. My program has on average one of four residents per year that are MD/PhD (my year is 2/4). I think that is much higher than most programs. Clearly, my program has an interest in MD/PhD's. Other programs I applied to could care less about the PhD, and some hinted that it was a 4 year waste of time not doing clinical ortho. Like everything else, it just depends on a match between what you have to offer and what the program desires.

Just about any high powered academic program that appears on the NIH's lists would want one. In my opinion, anyway.
