The Summer Research Internship provides an accepted or currently enrolled medical student with experience working closely with leading Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care faculty on clinical and/or care delivery research projects on a full-time basis (8 am-5 pm M-F) over the course of an 8-12 week period.
Students will have opportunities to work with faculty such as Department Chair Dr. Kevin Bozic MD, MBA, Dr. David Ring MD, PhD, and Dr. Karl Koenig, MD, MS.
Required Qualifications
- Interest in value-based care
- Accepted or currently enrolled in medical school
- Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Responsible and timely, with the ability to manage multiple ongoing projects and the ability to work both independently and as a team
- Highly motivated and extremely detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
- Professional and collegial attitude
- Strong critical thinking and written/verbal communication skills
- Completion of college-level statistics coursework and/or familiarity/experience with data analysis
- Prior experience with core research-related competencies, such as study design, preparing presentations and/or posters
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency with data analysis
Responsibilities
- Work with Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care faculty on research projects. Project topics and types of studies will depend on department priorities and on the research interests of the Department Chair, Kevin Bozic, MD, MBA (an Orthopaedic surgeon), and other faculty members.
- Duties may include but are not limited to: literature review; data collection, entry, and analysis; abstract and manuscript writing; administrative duties as needed to support research projects.
- Abide by all research standards, including compliance with documentation requirements, ethical conduct of research, and good clinical practices.
- Help prepare research-related presentations and publications presented by Surgery and Perioperative Care faculty at national conferences (e.g. American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons).
- Attend departmental or other meetings as well as clinical conferences and other departmental or school-wide events.
- Opportunities for observation and shadowing in the clinic and/or operating room may be available depending on interest and receipt of required clearances and approvals.
Deliverables
Expectations for deliverables will vary by project, but will typically include the preparation of an abstract and/or manuscript for each research project. Expectations will be discussed in an ongoing basis with the project Principal Investigator and during weekly meetings with the Assistant Director of Research.
Stipend
The intern will receive a one-time stipend of $1600.
