Dr. Eric Cohen is seeking an ambitious 2021 graduate or medical student who is interested in a year-long research coordinator position in the field of total joint reconstruction to strengthen his/her application for medical school or orthopedic residency, expose the fellow to academic research, and enhance research skills.  The fellow will be directly involved in all facets of the research process of the PEPPER Study at University Orthopedics. The PEPPER Study, which stands for Pulmonary Embolism Prevention after Hip and Knee Replacement is a national research investigation aimed to better understand which blood thinners are best at preventing blood clots following total hip and knee arthroplasties. This study looks at the safety and effectiveness of the three most commonly prescribed and used anticoagulants after hip and knee replacements in America; Aspirin, Warfarin (also known as Coumadin), and Xarelto (also known as Rivaroxaban).The research coordinator will be responsible for consenting and enrolling patients for PEPPER, involved in the development and organization of workflow and study design, managing of IRB approvals, as well as preparation of presentations. The position will allow the research coordinator to work closely with physicians, residents, fellows, and faculty and have the opportunity for potential publication and presentation of research.

Duration: 1 year
Where: University Orthopedics in Providence, RI
When: July 1, 2020 (dates are flexible)
Salary: Annual salary of $30,000

Duties of the research coordinator will include:
- Responsible for consenting patients in person during clinic hours and through an econsenting process
-Responsible for data collection and management throughout relevant studies including submission of manuscripts-Responsible for coordination between UOI and the head PEPPER sites.  - Quantitative data analyses of resultant data-Maintaining communication with the 6 total joint surgeons participating in this study- Provide a wide range of support in research administration, grant proposal, publication tracking-Management of advisory research coordinators
Specific prerequisites and characteristics of the coordinators should include:
- Motivation for a career in orthopedic surgery
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Clinical or technical research experience- Excellent organizational and communication skills- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Benefits of the position:- Opportunity for clinical experience and patient interaction -Opportunity for mastery of official patient consenting process -Opportunity to shadow total hip and knee arthroplasty surgeries
