Position: Clinical Research Fellow
Positions: 1
Duration: 1 year
Location: University of Utah Department of Orthopedic Surgery – Division of Orthopaedic Trauma – Salt Lake City, UT
Salary – paid position 

The Orthopedic Trauma Division (Dr. Thomas Higgins, Dr. David Rothberg, Dr. Justin Haller, and Dr. Lucas Marchand) is looking for a motivated medical student to apply for a one-year research fellowship.  Only students from United States accredited MD programs will be considered for this position.  Fellows will have the opportunity to attend lectures, Grand Rounds, interact with residents/staff, and shadow in the clinic and OR.  This includes all of the lectures attended by the residents as well as access to our Surgical Knowledge and Integration (SKI) lab.  Furthermore, this fellow will have access to a biomechanics lab if this is an area of interest. Requirements: 
  1. MS3 or MS4 students with a strong interest in orthopaedic research and a planned career in orthopaedic surgery and academic medicine.
  2. Prior research experience preferred. Statistical experience strongly preferred.
  3. Ability to work independently and complete tasks in an efficient manner
  Responsibilities:
1.      Assist research coordinators with patient screening and enrollment for prospective studies
2.      Submit protocols to the IRB for research fellow driven projects with the help of the research coordinators
3.      Participate in weekly research meetings
4.      Contact patients for Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs)
5.      Processing of patient samples for basic science projects
6.      Participation in large animal model creation and surgery
7.      Drafting manuscripts and abstracts
8.      Statistical/data analysis 

Study Opportunities: In the orthopedic trauma division, we participate in a variety of study types.  Research fellows should expect to participate in basic science projects, biomechanics, anatomical studies, cost analysis, database studies, retrospective reviews, multicenter trials, and prospective trials.  There are internal grant opportunities to fund fellow research initiatives. The fellow should expect to publish/submit 10-15 papers by the end of their experience.
