The Adult and Paediatric Spine Deformity division at Hoag Orthopaedic Institute is seeking a US-based medical student to serve as a Clinical Research Assistant for the 2025- 2026 academic year.

The Spine Clinical Research Assistant will work to develop, execute, and publish original scientific research over the course of the year. They may have opportunities for clinical exposure in the clinic and operating room. The assistant will closely work with Dr. Pawel Jankowski (PI) and compensated accordingly. Dr. Jankowski is a board-certified, fellowship trained spine surgeon focusing on scoliosis, spinal deformities, and complex spine surgery. Dr. Jankowski is actively involved in scoliosis research focusing on improving patient outcomes after surgery, including artificial intelligence applications to optimize spine surgical planning along with analysis of spine biomechanics to help design better spinal implants. Dr. Jankowski has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented on spine deformity research topics.  He is also a member of the Scoliosis Research Society. 

We seek a motivated student who is organized and task-oriented, and can learn new skills. Demonstrated interest in spine surgery and research, strong academic performance and writing ability, familiarity with statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata) and Surgimap is preferred. Open to any medical student taking a research year between 3rd and 4th year of medical school. Other medical students will be considered, but we are UNABLE TO PROVIDE VISAS. Start Date: Flexible (Targeting May–June 2025).
