The Clinical Experience
The Hip Preservation Fellowship at UPMC provides an intensive clinical exposure to a variety of disorders of the adolescent and young adult hip population including femoroacetabular impingement, acetabular dysplasia, advanced deformity, and osteoarthritis. Extensive and balanced exposure to both open techniques (periacetabular osteotomy, surgical hip dislocation, femoral osteotomy) and arthroscopic techniques (labral repair / reconstruction, bony correction, capsular repair / reconstruction) will be provided. Clinical experiences will include robust exposure to cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, including complex CT and MR analyses of hip pathology, dynamic ultrasound evaluations, and advanced presurgical planning.
The Academic Experience
Fellows will be supported to pursue research endeavors covering a spectrum of both clinical and basic/translational research work. Active collaborations with Orthopaedic Laboratories at the University of Pittsburgh, including the Biodynamics Laboratory, Orthopedic Engineering and Sports Medicine Laboratory, and Bethel Musculoskeletal Research Center, will facilitate advanced research opportunities during the fellowship year if desired.
General Information
The fellowship is a 12-month experience. The fellowship candidate should have completed a recognized orthopedic residency program. An established interest in hip joint preservation is assumed. Background in sports medicine and/or pediatric orthopedics are encouraged. A certificate of recognition will be awarded to the fellow upon satisfactory completion of the fellowship program.
