Hello, my name is Peter and this is my first post.
I just received a diagnosis from my doc ( hand surgeon ) that the severity of arthritus in my left thumb requires surgery and a CMC Arthoplasty LRTI is the procedure he suggested. ... remove small bone and fill the space with a tendon wrapped into a ball taken from my wrist
As a guitarist for almost 50 years I am very concerned about two things ..First, will I be able to regain joint mobility, strength, and fine motor skills to achieve my prior skill level as a guitarist playing at an advanced level ... Second, the four month plus recovery / rehab time is troubling.
I would appreciate any advice or experience sharing related to my concerns. Also, I discovered there is another surgical fix that does not disturb the tendons but uses a spherical ball impant .... and recovery \"return to normal \" is only 3-5 weeks .. much more attractive than the other procedure.

Thumb arthritis can cause severe pain, swelling, and decreased strength and range of motion, making it difficult to do simple tasks, such as turning doorknobs and opening jars. Treatment generally involves a combination of medication and splints. Severe thumb arthritis might require surgery.
In the early stages of thumb arthritis, treatment usually involves a combination of non-surgical therapies. If your thumb arthritis is severe, surgery might be necessary. To relieve pain, your doctor might recommend: topical medications, such as capsaicin or diclofenac, which are applied to the skin over the joint. A splint can support your joint and limit the movement of your thumb and wrist. If pain relievers and a splint aren't effective, your doctor might recommend injecting a long-acting corticosteroid into your thumb joint. Corticosteroid injections can offer temporary pain relief and reduce inflammation. And then you can do without surgery. All medications can be purchased at a Canadian Pharmacy. There are good prices and fast delivery.
