Program Information
Staff/Faculty/Chairman: The chairman is by far one of the nicest and most genuine orthopaedic surgeons you will ever meet. He always went out of his way to ensure that all away students were having the best experience and was extremely supportive and involved with the residents. The faculty is a very talented group of surgeons that always welcomed me into the OR's/clinics.
Didactics/Teaching: This is the only school that I know of where all interns attend 3hrs of didactics once a week with all other residents. This time is protected for interns and the lectures were amazing. All attendings also attend the lectures so you are often given many viewpoints/opinions. In addition, there is a daily morning report where every case that came in the previous day is presented and discussed-more can be learned in this 45min than often in hours of lectures and students are encouraged to participate and present.
Operating Experience: There are always multiple OR's running and often one or two OR's running around the clock due to the heavy volume of trauma that is seen. Medical student participation was always encouraged and the number and diversity of cases was extremely impressive.
Clinic Experience: There is also no lack of clinic experience. There is an abundance of clinic and office experience no matter what service you're rotating through.
Research Opportunities: Every resident that I worked with was working on some type of research so it seems like there are plenty of opportunities. Many of the attendings, especially the trauma attendings, along with the help of fellows, have made significant research contributions.
Residents: The residents could not have been any better. They are a hard working, dedicated, knowledgeable group of people who are also extremely down to earth and fun to work with. They always took the time to teach me and include me in procedures. They always looked out for my best interest and made sure that I had face time with the chair.
Lifestyle: The hospital is busy, you will learn non-stop. Fractures come in constantly and there are always multiple OR's running, often around the clock. The exposure, diversity, and volume of cases is enormous.
Location/Housing: Being located 20min from the city is awesome and being the only nearby Level 1 Trauma Center makes for a busy Trauma Bay/ED around the clock.
Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion: UMDNJ has everything needed to train the best orthopaedic surgeons-huge case load with nonstop trauma, world-renowned attendings, knowledgeable and fun residents, ltos of research, and a chairman dedicated to the education of residents.
