Program Information
Staff/Faculty/Chairman: The faculty here are great. They really care about teaching residents and medical students. They are some of the coolest, most down to earth attendings in the hospital. The chairman is quite famous and is constantly trying to improve the residents experience. He is very approachable and is often hosting social events for the residents.
Didactics/Teaching: There are lectures once or twice during the week depending on what service. Also, friday mornings are protected academic time for resident lectures (led by faculty/visiting faculty), grand rounds and then didactics/labs/anatomy review/etc. Overall, a great experience and the residents get exposed to everything they need.
Operating Experience: The OR experience is really excellent. There are only two fellows in the program (both on the spine service). All of the services are run by residents and the residents get a lot of operating experience. By the time they are chiefs they all feel extremely comfortable with all the bread and butter orthopaedic cases and more. The operating starts early, and I saw the interns doing a lot of the easier cases with the attending just watching and giving advice. Responsibility is obviously geared towards surgical ability and experience. No one gets in over their heads.
Clinic Experience: Residents get good clinic experience and they all feel comfortable with the exam. One of the spine clinics is often cited as the most educational clinic they've ever seen. Almost all of the attendings actively involve the residents in all aspects of patient care and operative planning
Research Opportunities: Research is definitely stressed at this program. Starting 3rd year, all the residents get 10 weeks of research time per year. As a 3, a lot of that time is spent filling in for other residents on vacation, but there is still plenty of time to get a project started. All of the faculty are involved with research, and there is plenty of opportunity to pursue research in any subspecialty
Residents: The residents are very laid back and fun to be with. They like students and enjoy teaching. I definitely felt like I could have gone here and fit in very well.
Lifestyle: Life style is good. When I was on the service the residents were out at a reasonable time everyday. The exception is on the Trauma service which can get very busy especially during the summer. All of the residents I spoke with had lives outside the hospital with activities and hobbies.
Location/Housing: New Haven is the biggest problem for the program. It has a bad reputation. I was surprised by how nice it was though. Lots of restaurants, and Yale is a nice campus. If you want a big city, New Haven isnt for you. It's obviously not New York or Boston. The surround towns are very ncie though and there is a lot to do if you know where to look.
Limitations: The residents get a very well rounded education and leave feeling comfortable in almost any situation. They all get awesome fellowships if they want it. All of the graduating and rising chiefs matched at their top choices.
Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion: I had a great time at Yale. It is a very solid program with exposure to all subspecialties. This was my top choice program, but I ranked it #2 for family reasons and because my wife was offered a job elsewhere that she couldn't turn down.
