Program Information
Staff/Faculty/Chairman: Trauma attendings very knowledgeable and allow the residents to get early hands on experience. Upper level residents are comfortable with most procedures. Hand attendings excellent experience, demand understanding of anatomy and current literature. Sports attendings hands down the best as you work with the University of Arizona Athletes. Foot and Ankle attendings are private practice doctors that educate you on running your own practice
Didactics/Teaching: Monday Fracture conference attended by all attendings and several community orthopedic surgeons where the pimping begins at the bottom and works its way up to the chiefs. Sports lectures follow the fracture clinic and they are very informative with UofA Docs and sports guys from Phoenix (suns and diamondback docs). Wednesday mornings are grand rounds with attending lectures or invited guests.
Operating Experience: 3 months as an Intern - Expect more than 30+ cases with you making the incision, reaming, nailing, and closing.
Jr Residents - comfortable with most procedures
Sr Residents - able to run their own room and teach jr residents

Clinic Experience: Like all clinics
Research Opportunities: Need to be self motivated, as attendings can help and guide research, but not the focus of this program. There is a full time Biomechanical Lab doing a lot of work on articular scaffolding.
Residents: Work Hard, Play Hard. Hang out in social settings frequently. Ortho Olympics in the fall, resident camping trip in the spring, paintball tournament for the incoming residents.
Lifestyle: Tucson, AZ is a college town with a million people, lots of things to do. Hiking, Biking, climbing, Golf, Live Music. Mellow town with a college scene and then upper scale dinning and clubs/lounges.
Location/Housing: Centrally located in Tucson. Median House price High 100's. 2/3 of all residents here own something House/condos/townhouse.
Phoenix only 1.5 hours away. Rocky Point resort in Mexico only a few hour drive.

Limitations: None
Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion: Excellent program with emphasis on hands on learning providing residents with top notch fellowships to continue their training.
Qualification
I am a current resident of this program.
Date of Rotation: 7/2008
