Program Review
| Staff/Faculty/Chairman | With a great blend of staff, some having spent many years there and some fresh out of a fellowship, they are one of the program's greatest strengths. They have every subspecialty covered and the program is looking to add more faculty. Dr. Zdeblick, the chairman, is very responsive to the residents and definitely has the programs headed in the right direction. The staff go to bat for the residents when it comes to fellowships and they place them in very strong ones (eg. Birmingham, Al for sports.) |
| Didactics/Teaching | There are morning didactics several days each week. I would guess that half are faculty and half are resident presented. I thought they spend a very balanced amount of time in the "lecture hall." |
| Operating Experience | The residents spent roughly 2.5 to 3 days a week in the OR. In the service I worked on, it ended up as the junior residents operating and the senior residents walking them through the cases. For more complex or unusual cases the senior operated more, but I though it was very appropriate. |
| Clinic Experience | The residents spent roughly 2 to 2.5 days a week in clinic. They were given autonomy in the majority of patient decisions. I dislike clinic as much as the next guy, but you have to learn indications for operation and they definitely do that at UW. |
| Research Opportunities | There seemed to be plenty of opportunities for residents to work on either clinical or biomechanical/bench research. I know several presented at large meetings, so they are doing good work. |
| Residents | After my month in Madison, I have to say that the residents were the strong suit of the program. They seemed to bend over backwards to help each other prepare for a case, learn in the OR, or in clinic. I think this aspect of programs is often overlooked; these are the people you spend the majority of the next 5 years of your life with! They would be a great group to work with. |
| Lifestyle | Their intern year is much of the usual, but I liked the fact they don't do CTS, neurosurgery, or transplant. They have a nightfloat system, so it can be tough for your turn as the R-2, but it is more than worth it in the R-3 through R-5 years. Trauma call can be heavy in the summer, but like many places, is very reasonable in the "off-season." |
| Location/Housing | Madison is a beautiful city that has much more to offer than its population would lead you to believe. Housing is very affordable, with many residents owning homes close to the hospital. I know that anyone that has spent time in Madison, loves it. |
| Limitations | I tried to be very critical of programs while rotating and interviewing, but I did not see any glaring problems in this program. |
| Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion | The program is one of the, if not the strongest program that I encountered while rotating or interviewing. I am ranking this my number one program and would strongly recommend everyone to look at UW when considering applying for, interviewing with, or ranking programs. |

Program Review
| Staff/Faculty/Chairman | Strong group of faculty. Continue to add young fellowship trained staff interested in teaching. |
| Didactics/Teaching | Conference Monday-Thursday. NO Saturday conference. Mostly indications and a mix of basic science and further case presentation. |
| Operating Experience | Generally depends on the staff. Private rotations are excellent for this. Seniors are comfortable and confident, and the tradition at this program is seniors teaching juniors with staff looking on. |
| Clinic Experience | Usually 2.5 days per week. As a resident, this always seem to be too much, but it is probably a nice balance. It is nice to have an opportunity to see the problems leading up to surgery and post-op course. |
| Research Opportunities | One of the few weaknesses only because it can be hard to find. Dr. Anderson (spine) is a whirlwind researcher and is working hard to facilitate more opportunities for solid research. Program is slightly more clinically inclined, but likely because that is more the attitude of the residents. Both basic science and clinical research available. |
| Residents | Incredible group. I feel quite privileged to work with these men/women. We have a great time at work and an even better time away from work. Bottom line--they essentially become family and will certainly watch your back while you watch theirs. Can't be underestimated in a program. |
| Lifestyle | Nightfloat system, so no inhouse call past 3rd year. Seniors come in to operate. When you're off, you're off. Work hours have never been a problem. |
| Location/Housing | Madison is great college town. Midwestern town with tons to do and reasonable place to live financially. |
| Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion | Great place to train. I cannot overstate the fact that fit is most important in a program. For me this is a nice balance of clinical/operative experience without getting beaten over the head with research. |

Program Review
| Staff/Faculty/Chairman | This program provides a comprehensive staff that covers all subspecialties. Dr. Zdeblick is the current chair and continues to mold this program into one of the top programs of the Midwest. |
| Didactics/Teaching | There are numerous scheduled lectures, discussions, that are given by both staff and residents. Many of the lectures are done on a rotating basis in order to help provide a core knowledge in orthopedics and basic science. |
| Operating Experience | There is plenty of early operating experience, especially with the private rotations at Meriter Hospital and the VA. |
| Clinic Experience | Clinic time is roughly 50% of your duties which provides the perfect split between OR and clinic. You will learn the reasons to operate as well as the difficult part of learning how to take care of patients afterwards including complications. |
| Research Opportunities | Most research is clinical at this program, but bench research is available with the assistance of PhDs if someone is motivated to go that route. |
| Residents | The residents at this program have always been a good group. The vast majority of the residents are married. |
| Lifestyle | The lifestyle at this program is excellent outside of the trauma service. There is plenty of time for outside activities. The call schedule has always been very reasonable and with the addition of the 80 hr work week, it has become even easier. |
| Location/Housing | Madison is a great town with plenty of activities around including fishing, boating, sailing, biking, etc... If you like the outdoors, there is plenty to do, even in the winter. |
| Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion | Overall, I feel that I had excellent training at this program and was prepared to go out into practice immediately if I would have chosen that route. I was extremely satisfied with my training and I believe the program is even better now under the direction of Dr. Zdeblick. |
