Program Review

Staff/Faculty/Chairman Ebraheim is hilarious and brilliant. More importantly, he works viciously hard for his residents, and they are well taken care of and well protected within the hospital system. Faculty all have a tremendous interest in teaching whenever they interact with the residents or students.
Didactics/Teaching Teaching here is incredible. For a few months before the OITE, residents and the chairman do an hour of questions 5 mornings out of the week (catered by Panera). Didactics are on Thursdays, and according to the residents, are getting progressively better.
Operating Experience Knife in your hand as a second year. This is a major strong point of this program. With experience comes more autonomy. On very simple cases, the resident(s) take the case from open to close. Often when seniors are with an attending, they won't even bother to scrub in. Only the chairman has a hard and fast rule about being present during the opening of every case. Trauma experience is brutal, but great for learning. The chairman runs Trauma/Gen, and works like an animal. Not to mention he is brilliant, and will teach things you need to know. Spine, Hand, Sports, Foot & Ankle, and Joints are all run very well. Peds is covered by going down to the Shriner's hospital during year 3. Only real weakness is Onc.
Clinic Experience Most clinics are about what you would expect. The chairman's clinic is chaos, seeing up to 70 patients from 8-12 in the morning, but the rest are completely reasonable. Attendings see all the patient's after the resident's, but the seniors dictate a majority of any given patient's care.
Research Opportunities The chairman is the most published Ortho in the nation. Enough said. If you want to get your name on some papers, there is ample opportunity. Also, almost all the attendings have some sort of project going on at any given time, and are open to help.
Residents Phenomenal group of guys. All of them are guys, although word is the chair/PD wants a girl soon, because he wants to get his daughters to work with him too. Residents have said that there has been a shift to more married guys recently, but for a long time, the majority were single, and they had fun. Great comradery amongst the guys. Routinely go out together, and have good relationships.
Lifestyle You only approach the 80 hour limit when you are rotating through the chair's service. The rest are completely reasonable, even lax by Ortho standards. Being that the cost of living in Toledo is so low, even on a resident's salary you can live very comfortably. As a result, the mentality of most in the program is "work hard, play hard."
Location/Housing Only real downside for most people, although I didn't mind since it is in my hometown. Most people complain about Toledo, saying that there isn't anything to do, the weather is terrible, the city is poor, etc. However, if you know where to look, there is a ton to do, and the weather is the same anywhere else in the Midwest. The city is poor, but that makes for great housing opportunities. You can get some real nice places on the cheap.
Limitations Onc, the Midwest climate, and the Toledo location (for some).
Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion Phenomenal. Very blue-collar work ethic. Operate early, learn bread & butter basics from all the specialties, along with a few tricks here and there, ample opportunity for research, residents routinely go to their first choice fellowships, and the group of guys is top-of-the-line. I would love to match here.

Qualification

I am a medical student at this school.
Date of Rotation 3/2011
