Program Information
Staff/Faculty/Chairman: The chair was one of the top two attendings of all the people I met on the interview trail out of the three places I rotated at - he was helpful and loved interacting with students/residents. The rest of the staff I met were all great too.
Didactics/Teaching: I would put up their academic schedule against any other program. I spent a month there and they went over everything from basic science to anatomy to fracture junk and so on. They have a half day on Wed of lectures (from staff and residents) as well as a morning conference usually most mornings before OR.
Operating Experience: One of the chiefs when I was there had over 2700 cases (had a ton of hand cases in there though); it was never double scrubbed, and there were a few cases where I as a student was first assist. We didnt get to go to any of the outpatient centers or other hospitals that the residents went to, but they covered cases of everything but onc.

even the interns were doing cases solo with the attending. the intern year seems nice - the interns arent slaves and are in the OR for most of the day on gen surg rotations. little floor work was needed.

Clinic Experience: a half day of uninsured patients (all the residents went) and a half day of post call clinic in an attending's office
Research Opportunities: mostly clinical - the residents must publish two papers and it seems like most stick to the two papers, although one of the residents had 9 published and one of the younger guys had 3 submitted already as a 2nd year. I dont really like bench research, so this sounded good to me. They had a statistician and medical editor and got full funding for everything.
Residents: this was the tightest knit group of residents I saw - we had a cookout and went out for wings in the month i was there. they were all happy with where they are and all seemed to be on top of everything ortho-wise. most were married and a few had kids.
Lifestyle: good - stick to 80 hours (program director even made us students stick to it). they moonlight and make a killing there.
Location/Housing: i liked columbus - its a medium size city and is a clean city. the osu campus is a fun place to hang out, but they have downtown split up into districts (brewery, arena, german village, short north (artsy), and i cant remember the rest). housing seemed pretty reasonable. the residents all owned houses ranging from small to pretty big.
Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion: i had this place number one for my rank list but slipped to #3. i would have loved to match there. i still stay in touch every once in a while with some of the residents and i dont think much has changed. anyone who matches there will be happy with it and will come out being an awesome orthopod. they all are getting into top fellowships and, as mentioned on the forum, continue to nail OITEs (98th-100th the last four years). the people at the hospital are happy and the lifestyle is nice.

the rumor is that they are applying for two more spots (only 2 now), which would have been nice my year......

Program Information
Staff/Faculty/Chairman: Dr. Fankhauser is a great guy. As a student you operate and spend time in clinic with him as well as in didactics daily. Rest of staff seemed friendly. Personalities vary from quiet to outgoing. Did not witness any unreasonable yelling or putting down the residents.
Didactics/Teaching: Best I've seen. As previously posted on other review. These guys do well on OITE and boards and know there stuff in clinic and OR.
Operating Experience: Operate early and often. Not sure about at Grant or Childrens as I did not spend time with the residents there.
Clinic Experience: 1/2 day a week in the chief residents clinic and every am post call. Do not operate post-call (which I think is good).
Research Opportunities: Able to do whatever you want. Must do 1 major and 1 minor project as stated previously.
Residents: Great group. Seemed to interact well in hospital as well as outside. Possibility to add another resident or 2 in next year or two.
Lifestyle: Strict 80 hour compliance. Not in before 6am or after 6 unless operating or on-call. which is home call. though 2's seem to stay in hospital. Moonlighting at sister hospitals as 3 and up.
Location/Housing: 15 th largest city in US. Large party seen secondary to ohio state univ. plenty to do otherwise.
Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion: Great program and people. I hope I match there in march

Program Information
Staff/Faculty/Chairman: Dr. Fankhauser is one of the nicest residency directors you will meet. He is very dedicated to the program as are the rest of the teaching staff. The staff all seem to get along well with the residents. They just completed their Residency review and there is discussion of adding another resident
Didactics/Teaching: Monday-7am Fracture conference Tuesday-7am Anatomy lab Wednesday- Didactics all am. Basic science, sub specialty lecturesThursday- 6:30am Subspecialty lectureFriday- 7am lecture
Operating Experience: Operate early and often. As an intern you are treated as a general surgery resident when on those months meaning that you do not get stuck on the floor. You build good operative skills. With the low # of residents there are cases to go around and the chiefs rarely take cases because they have their own service and patients to operate on. Every resident is on their own service so you operate with those staff. This being the case you don't do joints only for a few months and then not see it again for 2 years you practice as a "real" orthopedist would and very your cases daily. This gives a good balance and lets you keep the knowledge in the front of your head. Spend 3 months at Trauma 1 center and 6 months at childrens hospital during year 3 and 4.
Clinic Experience: Wednesday afternoon all residents go to the chief clinic. This gives you the chance to get plenty of clinic experience. Also at Mount Carmel they do not operate post call. Usually the hours after call until noon are spent in one of the staff from your services clinic.
Research Opportunities: Great facilities are not present for bench research but 1 minor and 1 major project are required for graduation.
Residents: Great group. Laid back but hard working. Very happy group for the most part. Get along well and interact outside of the hospital often.
Lifestyle: Good lifestyle as Ortho can go. Strict hour compliance. No rounding on Sunday unless on call. Staff rounds on Sundays. Usually get call schedule to work out for at least one and usually 2 weekends off. Ability to moonlight starting as a 3. Nice bonus income. Hospital gives $2400 at the beginning of year to use for food. Free close parking. Friendly staff. Very little scut. Columbus is a good size city with plenty to do.
Location/Housing: Hospital is in rougher part of town but this adds to some trauma experience. Campus is safe. Level 2 trauma center but level 1 trauma goes to nearest trauma center so they get some of that also.
Overall Rotation Experience/Conclusion: Great place to rotate. Great place to train
