Mailing lists that cater to the needs of orthopaedic surgeons have been in existence since 1995. There has been a good deal of fluidity in the organization of the lists but since 1998 the majority of orthopaedic surgeons who use a mailing list subscribe to one or more of the "Orthopod" family of mailing lists. These include |

| The Orthopod list is very
vigorous with an average of 8.8 messages a day in 1998. The Hand Surgery list is also very
popular with weekly case presentations moderated by Charles Elton. The Sports Medicine
list is still active less so than the others. The remaining lists have very little
traffic. For this form of communication to work one has to have a reasonable expectation that questions and problems are answered. Conversely to "lurk" on the list one has to expect that the discussion will be about interesting topics. The experience has been that if an individual or small group takes some responsibility for keeping the list going it is a valuable experience. If no one takes this on, or the person doing it stops then the level of discussion deteriorates and the list no longer interests people. Other lists with a focus on orthopaedics or trauma are Hand Surgery Mailing List Associated with the Electronic Journal of Hand Surgery at Leeds University UKIndiaOrth Mailing List : Primarily focusing on issues related to Indian orthopedics.
