Etiquette When Sending
Images
The key thing to remember
here is that Internet connection isn't free for most people and in some areas of the world
users pay the Internet Service Provider according to the number of kilobytes of data
passed. So if you send someone a file that is a megabyte in size these people will pay a
hundred times more for that image than if you sent the same information in a 10 kilobyte
file. Since it is rare for the 1 megabyte file to contain more useful information than the
compressed, edited, resized 10 kb file it is a serious breach of "netiquette"
and will attract hostile comment! Many sophisticated members of an email list set up a
filter to block out all messages above a certain size so a message with a large file will
not be passed to them. This defeats your objective in sending the information. For
this reason you should familiarize yourself with the section on editing images and
practice doing it.
Another option which is
used by people with access to website servers to which they can
upload files is to post the images on
the World Wide Web and circulate the URL addresses to the people who might be interested. That
way it is up to them to connect with the website. This should be done if your message has a
large number of images or they have to be large for some reason. It is polite to warn
people of the size of images that you post - unless they are very small.
