As you saw in Chapter 1, Introduction, correspondence via e-mail can be as simple as sending a message to a friend, or much more complex. The first users of the predecessor of the internet, the Arpanet, found that they used the system more for sending e-mail than they did research documents, and that is the way it is today. More people use the internet for e-mail than for anything else. "E-mail" can also be much more complex and powerful than just sending a text message to a friend.
