International Upper Extemity Fellowships

Postby kkruse89 » Sat Jan 15, 2011 1:00 pm

Does anyone know of a way to find out about of the international upper extremity fellowships. I know of two, there is one in Australia that we have sent residents to in the past and I have also heard that there is one in London. I am not sure of how to find any other's. Thanks.

There's a sports one in New Zealand as well. I know Butch Krishnan has also worked with Pascal Boileau for a while in France. I'd like to know more about these fellowships as well.

Please post if someone has first hand experience of these programs of their hands on component specifically arthroscopy of shoulder/elbow.
I wouldn't consider blindly applying anywhere . If there are any good programs with good training , will be desireable .Some of these I know are not focussed on shoulder arthroscopy viz R Page fellowship

London, Ontario has a good upper ext combined program. It is very well rounded; it ranges from significant hand to TSA/reverses but the main weakness is probably shoulder arthroscopy

Peter Poon runs a shoulder/elbow fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand. Usually for 6 months, Peter is academic and a brilliant teacher. Alot more hands on than US fellowships, and like the Australian fellowships above is much better paid.

I'm a canadian surgeon who did a fellowship in Australia in 2009.
There are some excellent fellowships in Australia and New Zealand that are very well structured with great mentors and autonomy. They also pay much better than US or Canadian Fellowships. Fellowships include hand, shoulder, adult recon, and foot/ankle. There are a few "upper limb" fellowships in Australia that focus on hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Ortho is very lucrative in australia so they tend to use the latest equipment and techniques. OR's can turn over in 10 minutes (private) or 1 hour (public) similar to north america.

For Shoulder Elbow rotacuff's list is very good
Melbourne - Simon Bell
Geelong - Richard Page
Sydney - David Sonnabend
Brisbane - Mark Ross
Adelaide - Greg Bain

For Hand
Melbourne - Victoria Hand Associates and Dandedong Fellowship with Tham and Harvey,
Sydney - Tonkin
Adelaide - Bain

Most of these are year long fellowships although I think Melbourne Orthopaedic Group has a 6 month fellowship that is probably the best known. they treat all the professional athletes in australia and Hoy does most of the world's cricketers and rugby players.

Fellowships in Australia have a "public" and "private" component, you will be operating by yourself on cases you have selected in the public sector, in the private you will be assisting/operating based on your staff surgeons preference. Its a good mix to learn and apply that as the surgeon. One thing you have to remember is it is very far away and you will be separated from those in canada or us by a huge time difference.

good luck.
