Any comments on california sports fellowships? Wondering if there are any current or previous fellows from program like SCOI, Kerlan Jobe, UCLA, etc and can comment on stregnths and weakness. I'm specifically curious about Kerlan Jobe. I heard it was a pretty nonoperative fellowship. Granted, a lot can be learned from watch big names operate, but I certainly don't want to watch for a year.

This is second-hand from guys ahead of me, but I've heard that KJ is OK. There's a bunch of surgeons though, and you're with each one for only a month. By the time you get to know them...you move on. Obviously big name place though.

SCOI is supposed to be awesome. Guys that interviewed last year said it was the best place in Cali.

SCOI was a great experience!

I completed the SCOI fellowship in 1994. I would say that overall it was a fabulous experience. If for no other reason than to work with Steve Snyder and become a master shoulder arthroscopist, it is worth the year's time. But besides that, the other guys like Ferkel (ankle arthroscopy), Friedman, DelPizzo, etc contribute so much to the experience. The weather and location are great, they are kind to you in terms of your work load outside the OR, etc. If you have any specific questions, please email me (skipheath@hotmail.com).

I've heard that the operative experience with Snyder is watching rather than doing. Is that true?

With Snyder's cases, you are usually holding the scope. He will often put his hands on yours to guide you and tell you which way to rotate the scope and so forth. You also will use the suture passing instrumentation, etc. You are shoulder-to-shoulder with him.
