Peds Fellowships

As a 3rd year medical student planning out my residency road, is there any advice I should heed if I'm intrested in doing a Peds fellowship?

ortho peds fellowship

Yes. Match.

There are more peds ortho fellowships than there are residents interested in them. The most important thing is matching in the best program (for you) that you can.

Other advice that really doesnt matter so much: If you are interested in peds ortho, you could set up an away rotation that focuses on that. I did a 4th year rotation in peds ortho (b/c my med school would not allow 3 plain ol' ortho rotations) and it was a great experience. You might give greater consideration towards programs that have children's hospitals & at least a few dedicated peds orthopods as there are programs that farm you out to other places for your peds experience. This might be good or bad depending on your perspective. It may stink to have to go somewhere else for any of your residency experience, but generally the places you are sent to are top notch. Another consideration is to make an effort on interviews to meet the peds ortho faculty as they will obviously have a huge impact on whether you maintain this very early interest.

Again, the best advice is simply to MATCH into a well balanced program where you will be happy and well prepared to pursue whatever path you ultimately decide . Good luck.

Looking for contact info for peds fellowships

Postby jrkunes » Mon Apr 02, 2007 10:27 am

Anyone have any information on contacting the numerous peds programs out there. I have started the laborious process of viewing each web page, but it would be nice to put this up on this forum so that we could look at info that any of us have. I couldn't find exactly who to contact for Scottish Rite in Atlanta, for example. Even Dupont's web page - super confusing.

University of Michigan

You should check out University of Michigan--new peds fellowship starting 2008-2009.

We have 5 Peds staff--including some big names like Fran Farley and Bob Hensinger (former president of the academy; current or former editor of Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery)--who could certainly plug you into an Academic job if so desired

The case load and variety are impressive--everything from scoliosis PSF's (as high as 6-8/week in the summertime) and VEPTR's to basic pediatric trauma--supracondylar humerus, both bone, ankles you name it

U of M- peds fellowship

Agree with everything HNIC said--tons of peds variety and volume here, although i think the fellowship is starting one year later 2009-2010--so for fourth year residents applying now

Im a second year resident here--despite being relatively inexperienced, ive already done close to thirty cases in three weeks not counting hardware removals (supracondylars, flex nails for femur fractures, scfe pinning, medial mal, both-bone forearm, distal radius, proximal humerus, epyphysiodesis, tib ant transfers, hamstring lengthenings) skin-to-skin. The attendings are very approachable and extremely nice--they want you to do the case

The upper level residents are busy doing femoral osteotomies, psf's for scoliosis, and veptr's

The program is very well connected in the Peds world--recent chief residents have gone on to do fellowship at CHOP, Texas Scottish Rite, and UCSD

Dr. Farley is awesome to work with and very well connected--when it is all said and done, im sure she could help you get a great attending position.

PM with questions.
