Spine: Over 700,000 vertebral compression fractures – broken spinal bones - occur annually in the United States. Many of these fractures result from untreated osteoporosis, and vertebral fractures can cause severe pain for nearly a third of people with the condition. On Wednesday, June 7, Marshfield Clinic physicians on staff at Saint Joseph's Hospital will discuss a leading surgical treatment for spinal compression fractures called percutaneous vertebroplasty. The program, featuring a pre-taped surgery of a vertebral compression fracture patient, will be webcast from 4 – 5 p.m. central standard time. (21:00 UTC) Expert commentary about the procedure will be provided by Fergus McKiernan, MD, metabolic bone disease specialist; Thomas Faciszewski, MD, orthopaedic surgeon; and Sanjay Rao, MD, neurological surgeon.

WAUKESHA, WI- ProHealth Care will broadcast a surgery live via the Internet during a webcast at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 17. The surgery will be a total knee replacement procedure at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital. This is ProHealth Care's first surgical webcast and it will kickoff a series of live surgeries ProHealth Care is planning throughout 2006.

The knee is the largest, strongest and heaviest joint in the body and carries almost half of the body's weight. If arthritis, injury or wear-and-tear wears away the cartilage in the knee, total knee replacement often becomes necessary to relieve pain and resume regular activities Orthopedic surgeon, Timothy Schultz, MD, will perform the procedure while T. Scott Stanwyck, MD, orthopedic surgeon, serves as moderator to explain the procedure and answer questions that viewers e-mail.

Orthopaedics: The Orthopaedic Specialty Center at Woodwinds Health Campus in Woodbury, Minnesota will host a demonstration of the most state-of-the-art approach to total knee replacement during a live surgery on the Internet. The web cast will be live from Woodwinds Health Campus, a member of the HealthEast Care System, on May 16, at 3:00 p.m. CDT, (20:00 UTC)

During a total knee replacement, plastic and metal parts are used to replace injured or damaged parts of the knee. Until now, a doctor had to rely on his or her experience to remove bone, replace it with implanted material and align the plastic or metal material with the bone. Since each patient's knee is different, this can prove to be challenging. Computer-assisted knee replacements offer better outcomes for patients and more accuracy for doctors.
