Ankle fracture 1 year ago - 2007/03/30 04:47 A year ago I fractured my ankle and had a very slow recovery. Everything finally seemed to be working fine but now it's starting to stiffen up and hurt quite a bit. Am I going to have problems like this for the rest of my life?

Re:Ankle fracture 1 year ago - 2007/03/30 04:49 You may be experiencing the start of post-traumatic adhesive capsulitis. This is like having a frozen ankle (similar to a frozen shoulder). Scar tissue forms in and around the ankle. Fibrous bands try to replace any torn ligaments and stabilize the joint.

Unfortunately the body sometimes overdoes it and too much scar tissue and too many adhesions form. Loss of motion from the restrictive tissue sets up a pain cycle early on.

It's best to make an appointment with your surgeon for some follow-up. You may need to resume some of your rehab exercises. The therapist can also mobilize the joint. This may break up some of the adhesions, restore the joint fluid, and ankle motion. If a short course of therapy doesn't change the picture, then surgery may be needed.

The doctor may have to cut the joint capsule and possibly remove some of the fibrous scar tissue. This type of surgery can sometimes be done arthroscopically. This saves you from having large, painful incisions and more scar tissue later.

Re:Ankle fracture 1 year ago - 2007/05/08 15:57 Yes you may be developing ankle stiffness or major problem affecting bony components ,what ever the problem you have come across , your stiffness will be there . You may benefit from physiotherapy if it is ankle stiffness

Re:Ankle fracture 1 year ago - 2007/06/12 00:50 Have you done any exercises for ankle? I think that ankle mobilization may help to decrease the ankle stiffness. strengthening of the muscles around the ankle joint is also necessary as well as stretching of the tendo chillies tendon is also helpful.

I hope my next message in english, greeting RUBEN ESCARRAMAN ALONSO

Re:Ankle fracture 1 year ago - 2009/06/09 18:22 Christian, I dont know if you still have your problems or they worstened.. and I am not a doctor..all I know is from experiences I had..I broke my ankle in 1972 It didnt brother me for years I wore heels, danced lifted weights..then one day it swelled this happen 20 years after the accident ..It hurt on and off for 5 years..then one day ..I hurt with every move I made..was terrible..I cried just at the fact that each year it is worse...now in 2009 a lot of years later I looked into fusion...didnt like what I read on it..or seen from others who have had it...I went to the doctors he told me you have two choices..ankle fusion..or replacement..I choose the TAR (total ankle replacement) .But I also had ostero in my heel..so he fused my heel in May (still in cast) and on June 12 in three more days I get my TAR..I am scared about it..but there is no longer a choice ..I can hardly walk. The fusion dont hurt at all went well..hoping the TAR will go as well!
Like I said I dont know if you check the forum still...but to answer your question from experience...YES it does get worse and NO you cant live with this pain for the rest of your life..you will come to a point where you will have to make the decisions I've made. Good Luck
